Film Studies

Film Studies will consist of four units:

AS consists of two units:

FS1: Exploring Film Form looks at how micro elements such as editing and cinematography make meaning. There is also a short creative project which involves the development of a short screenplay or storyboard.

FS2: British and American Film has three components which are based on producers and audiences, topics in British film and a comparative study of two American films.

A2 consists of two units:

FS3: Film Research and Creative Projects include a small scale research project and a short creative project.

FS4: Varieties of Film Experience: Issue and Debates which is divided into three sections – world cinema topics, spectatorship topics and a single film critical study.

How is the course assessed?

The FS1 coursework will be ongoing from September and due for
completion before Easter.

 

The FS2 examination will be undertaken in June.

 

The FS3 coursework will be ongoing from September and due
for completion by Easter.

 

The FS4 examination will be undertaken in June.

What Next?

Film Studies stands well as an academic subject on its own and is being increasingly recognised as such particularly with the growth in the film industry in the UK. It combines well with other subjects such as English, Media or Modern Languages.

 

Film graduates have made careers in areas such as communications, advertising, publishing, the cinema industry, journalism, broadcasting and education. Postgraduate courses have included Linguistics, Multimedia, Communication and Culture and of course Film-making.

Grade C or above in English is recommended due to the academic nature of the subject.
