Health and Social Care

The BTEC First Certificate - Three Units:

Unit 1 Communication and individual rights within Health and Social
Care Sectors
Unit 2 Individual needs within Health and Social Care Sectors*
Unit 3 Vocational experience in a Health or Social Care Setting


* Following Unit 2, students will also have an opportunity to gain an
emergency First Aid Certificate (CPR)

 

BTEC First Diploma - an additional three units:

Unit 4 Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care
Unit 6 Human Lifespan Development
Unit 7 Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Social Care

How is the course assessed?

You will be formally assessed through portfolio based evidence. You will not sit any exams on either the certificate or diploma programme. All assignments are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

Associated Costs

A CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check is a compulsory element to any Health and Social Care course which involves vocational practice. Students are expected to pay the full cost (£36 approximately), and additional costs may be incurred if sufficient evidence cannot be provided (passport/driving licence etc).

What Next?

On successful completion of your BTEC First course you can consider a wide range of employment opportunities or progress to a Level 3 programme of study, such as CACHE, Applied AS/Double AS in Health and Social Care and/or other related A Levels such as Sociology or Psychology.

Specific Entry Requirements

The BTEC First Certificate/Diploma in Health and Social Care is a practical, work-related course and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced qualification. Students who enter with at least one of the following qualifications are likely to benefit more readily from the programme:

 

BTEC Foundation Certificate in a related subject

Other related Levels 1 or 2 qualifications A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to four GCSEs at grades D – G.

 

BTEC First Certificate

Students undertake three units over one year, an overall grade for the qualification is awarded at a pass, merit or distinction. The BTEC Certificate is equivalent to two GCSEs grades A* – C.

 

BTEC First Diploma

Students undertake six units over one year, an overall grade is then awarded at a pass, merit or distinction. The BTEC Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A* – C.
