12.05.09 The Great Outdoors

Fifty four AS Geography students were involved in a residential fieldtrip to Orielton Field Studies Centre, Pembrokeshire from Monday 6th April to Wednesday 8th April 2009. The trip is an annual occurrence and is designed to help the students develop key skills and competencies for their AS level examinations.

During the course of the trip students experience a variety of geographical processes, concepts and phenomenon, and as a consequence, it is a great opportunity to put their geographical skills and theoretical knowledge into practice!

On the first day of the trip, students visited Saundersfoot and Kilgetty to examine settlement change. The day was wet and wild, with the students having to don their very fetching bright yellow waterproofs! However, the students coped admirably with the conditions!  They collected some excellent data throughout the day in between seeking refuge in the amusement arcade during particularly heavy downpours!

On day two, students were up at 7:30am in readiness for the challenge of investigating vegetation succession at the Broomhill Burrows sand dune system. Thankfully the sun was shining and students spent some time basking in the sunshine and examining changes in vegetation diversity and complexity. Following the investigation it was back to base for tea, cakes, analysis of data and the small matter of Manchester United versus Porto!

The final day started with the usual fry up and then everyone was on the road to Haverfordwest! During the day students investigated changes in shopping provision and found time for a spot of retail therapy and a quick cappuccino! It was then time to pack and head back to Cardiff for a well earned Easter break!
