At St. David’s, subject choices are supplemented by the Welsh Baccalaureate contributing much to students’ personal development.
The Welsh Assembly Government introduced the Welsh Baccalaureate to transform learning for young people in Wales.
It is an exciting qualification for students that adds:
The Welsh Baccalaureate, or the Welsh Bacc as it’s more commonly known, is a qualification for 16 – 19-year-olds which acts as a framework for everything you do at college. Students taking the Advanced Diploma must take at least two A Levels (or equivalent) as well as the Core.
The Welsh Bacc Core programme includes: Wales, Europe and the World; work-related education; personal and social education as well as the acquisition of all six key skills.
All Level 3 students are expected to integrate their studies into the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification. This is primarily done through two compulsory sessions each week.
Although there are no formal exams within the Core, students present the outcomes of research they have carried out – an extremely useful skill for study at Higher Education institutions.
The Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma is worth 120 UCAS points – the equivalent of an A grade at A Level – and is recognised in Higher Education increasingly both within Wales and in the rest of the UK.
Without doubt, our students have obtained places at universities including Oxford, Exeter and Manchester as a result of their completion of the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma.
